Throughout my research travels, many allergy journals were complied which contained specific case studies with references to sunflower seeds, pollen and dust. The research was fascinating and ranged from dermal to lung allergic reactions. The most promising article referenced a specific protein that caused the allergic reaction, this could prove important for potential vaccines.
Now I am faced with a narrative project that is quite promising. I will be discussing allergies in the manor of an allergy journal review. The entertaining part will be my unique twist on it all. I am undecided when it comes to my contribution, but I have though of some possibilities.
1) Use this research to propose a medication (topical or oral) instead of a vaccine.
2) Propose sunflower petals as a potential allergen.
3) Compare to peanuts and discuss the unimportance/ insignificance of sunflower allergies.
Any thoughts?
Jessica,
ReplyDeleteAlthough all is interesting, I would be interested in the comparison of sunflowers with peanuts because I was thinking the same thing: is it that harmful? It can't be!
Is vaccine really neccessary for allergies to sunflower? Like most other plants, besides poisonous ones of course, a little oral medication or skin if rashes occur should be enough? Can this really be the case? I would be interested to hear that.
Comparing the algergy reaction of sunflower to that of peanut allergy reaction
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI think this mostly up to you, whatever choice you make for your project it will be fine eventually. I think you've done good research enough for your project. Well done for all your hard work Jessica.

Wow, this sounds very interesting. When I think of allergies I don't really think of any specific plant besides this big pine tree at my parents that showers us with clouds of pollen, crazy. What makes the sunflower special besides this protien that sounds very interesting? Is it unique to the sunflower? I wonder if we will get to share our papers, if we do I would love to read yours.

That's great! Especially living in a state that has some of the highest percentages of allergy sufferers. They say that you don't know what allergies really are or allergy suffering until you move to Oregon! :). I think that holds truth!

I like the first point. I would like to know if topical medications are enough to treat allergy from sunflower because the vaccine might not be available for some people. The vaccine might be expensive and some people will not be able to afford it.
